The undefeated Hoxie Mustangs went on the road to face the defending 3A-3 conference champion Harrisburg Hornets in high school football action on Friday. After falling behind 13-0 in the third quarter, Hoxie battled back to tie the game and force overtime, where Houston Hancock's two-yard run gave the Mustangs a 19-13 win in the conference showdown.
The Mustangs entered the game as the sixth-ranked team in The Jonesboro Sun's Best 7 Under the Sun poll, but it was Harrisburg who jumped to a 7-0 lead early in the first quarter.
That score held until the Hornets extended their lead to 13-0 with 4:32 to play in the third period.
The Mustangs answered quickly, only a minute later, as Hancock scored on a 43-yard run. An unsuccessful conversion attempt left Hoxie with a 13-6 defecit.
Hancock lit things up again with an 18-yard pass to Cody West with seconds left to play. Brad Cook's PAT tied the game 13-13.
Harrisburg had the first opportunity to score in the overtime, but Hoxie came up with a big defensive stand, denying the Hornets any points.
The Mustangs then went on offense and captured the win on Hancock's run.
Hoxie recorded 172 rushing yards to Harrisburg's 122.
Hancock notched 56 yards on seven carries and scored two touchdowns. Alex Ward had 11 carries for 42 yards, and Tyler Thompson recorded eight carries for 30 yards. Brad Cook had 23 yards on five carries, and Houston Waldrupe closed the night with 18 yards on six carries.
