WR City Council passes
resolution regarding bridge

During the regular meeting on Sept. 11, the Walnut Ridge City Council expressed concerns regarding the structural deficiency of the U.S. 63 bridge over Black River at Black Rock.

Aldermen passed a resolution which notes that the bridge has been designated as deficient, and because "U.S. Highway 63 is a major thoroughfare for interstate traffic from Memphis to Kansas City, as well as citizens of Lawrence County traveling from the eastern side of the county to the west ... the council petitions for the support of its United States Congressional delegates to take necessary action, including, but not limited to, appropriate legislation for the repair or replacement ... before a catastrophe occurs similar to the collapse of the Mississippi River bridge in Minneapolis."

Councilmen also passed a resolution concerning the U.S. Highway 67 corridor, which petitions for the congressional delegates to declare the corridor from Walnut Ridge to Missouri a high priority corridor.

The resolution also asks that the four-lane U.S. Highway 67 be connected to Interstate 30 in a timely manner "to provide a vital developmental link in the Delta region of Arkansas and all of middle America."

In other business:

the council voted to have its Oct. 9 meeting at the Walnut Ridge Army Flying School Museum, rather than the municipal building, and the Nov. 13 meeting at the new Walnut Ridge Fire Station on U.S. 67-B.
Alderman Paula Haskins reported on the progress of the city's website.
council members discussed a walkway access to the city Stewart Park from Eastwood-Westwood Circle.
aldermen discussed a complaint about individuals parking at a private residence, located at 321 West Elm, near the Lawrence County Courthouse, on court days.
