Mustang volleyball in transition

Volleyball season is underway and Hoxie's Lady Mustangs are gearing up for another big year in 2007. This season will be a year of transition for the Lady Mustangs, as both the junior and senior high teams return only one starter from last season.

"In senior high, Megan Black is our strongest player and our only returning starter," said Coach Judy Goodwin. "She is an excellent blocker, hitter and server and she plays scrappy on defense. We are counting on her experience to lead our team."

"Ashley Glenn and freshman Chasity Becker will set the ball for us and are doing a good job. Chasity will be a force on the front line, also. Ashley will play all six rotations," added Goodwin.

"Lindsey Ginn, a transfer from Walnut Ridge, will share time with Kelsey Dobbs. Lindsey will play middle hitter and Kelsey will play defense."

"Courtney Jones is a freshman and is doing a great job hitting the ball. Ashley Ramsey is playing six rotations. She is really a defensive specialist, but has to step up and hit weak side for us."

"I'm excited about this team because they are such team players. They support each other all the time and that means more to me than anything," said Goodwin.

Junior high

"In junior high, I am counting on Kelsey Lewis, my only starter from last year, to really step up and be a leader." She is our best hitter and server and is doing a great job."

"Setting the ball will be Amanda Whaley and eighth-grader Katelyn Cook. They both have really good hands and work hard, and are good hitters, too."

"Devine Wilson is who I consider our defensive specialist and reads the ball well. Amy Galbreath, a transfer from Black Rock, is a good server and hitter and is doing a great job, considering she and has only been playing since last year."

"Alyssa Coggins hits for us and shares time with Jessica Boothe, who is doing a good job of playing on the back row for us this season."

The junior Lady Mustangs began the season with victories over Cave City and Marion.
