The Lawrence County Farm Bureau announced at its annual meeting Monday night that it has established the Bill Edmondson Memorial Scholarship Fund. The meeting was held at Van Ellis Cafetorium on the Walnut Ridge School campus.
The scholarship is in memory of Edmondson, who died March 3. He was agency manager for Farm Bureau Insurance in Lawrence County for 38 years.
Lawrence County Farm Bureau has established the fund with an initial endowment of $10,000 and has committed to give $1,500 contributions each year over the next 10 years, according to John Andrews, Farm Bureau member. After that time, with a $25,000 total contribution, the scholarship should be fully endowed and self-funding, he added.
The scholarship is being set up through the Arkansas State University Foundation. It will be presented to a Lawrence County student attending ASU with preference given to agriculture majors. Andrews said the first recipient should be named for the 2008-09 school year.
Steve Owens, vice president for university advancement at ASU, and Dr. Robert L. Potts, chancellor of ASU-Jonesboro, were present at the banquet for the announcement.
