Bobcats are 35 strong,
have high hopes
Larry Treadway, Walnut Ridge High School athletic director and head football coach, reports that the 2007 senior high Bobcat football team consists of 35 players.
Summer football practice began on Aug. 1. "So far, we've got some nicks and pains (most heat-related), but no real injuries to speak of," Treadway said on Monday.
Last night, the Bobcats were scheduled to meet Cave City in a pre-season scrimmage. The Cave City team runs their offense similar to Hoxie, which is the season opener for the Cats on Sexton Field, Aug. 31.
The senior high Bobcats are bringing back senior Tyler Meadors, who returns as starting quarterback. "He's a pretty cool operator," Treadway said, adding that Meadors is also competitive. "He'll have a whole lot to do with our success."
Treadway has high hopes for the Bobcat offensive line. Probable players include: 275-pound Colton Adkisson at center, Ryan Bounds at 230 lbs., John Monkus at 190 lbs., George Bruton at 240 lbs. and Zach Mullen at 225 to 230 lbs.
"We have high hopes that the offensive line will get better every week and that it will be the reason for us to move the ball," he said.
Probable running backs on offense will include senior Tel Britton and Brandon Dawson.
Colton Simpson, Adam Morgan and Paul Pfeffer are probable fullbacks.
"On defense, we're expecting some big things from Brandon Dawson and Colton Simpson as linebackers," he said. The coaching staff is also looking at Archie Roderick and Corey Sellers as defensive tackles and William Wilcoxson at nose guard.
In the defensive end slots, probable starters include Jared Blackwell, Brian Archibald, Justin Cable, Josh Vidal and Robert Rider.
"The defensive secondary will be a little young, but they are athletic," Treadway said. Among them will be Logan Gaither, Derek Medlock, Bennett Dudley, Mitchell Thompson, C.J. Tate, Nick Dail and Tristan Fernandez.
"Logan Simpson will help us as linebacker and Kaleb Dodd at defensive end," Treadway said.
While the Bobcats are in a conference made up of six teams this year, Treadway said the conference will be stronger next year with the addition of three more schools. Joining the football conference next year will be Salem, East Poinsett County and Cedar Ridge.
The Bobcat football coaching staff consists of Treadway, as head coach, along with Joe Fisher, Jason Ward, Matt Gay and Shane Duncan, assistants. Managers are Preston Drake and Jayce Matthews.
