Hoxie Mustangs are
up and ready for football
"I am looking forward to the season," said Tom Sears, head football coach of the Hoxie Mustangs. He has two good reasons to be excited: the Mustangs have more depth with 44 players, and his team has a lot of returning skilled players.
Sears said his team has worked extremely hard in the heat that they have been dealt, with everyone showing up and giving 100 percent. He is very proud of this group of players.
"We have been able to get a lot of practices in, along with attending pads camp and seven-on-seven camp," Sears said.
His outlook for the season will be to shoot for the conference championship, along with other strong ball clubs, such as Corning and Harrisburg. Other teams in the conference include Barton, EPC, Brinkley, Piggott and Hughes.
The senior Mustangs will be lead by seniors Alex Ward, Tyler Thompson and Houston Hancock, the quarterback.
Coaches with Sears are Sean Cockrell, defensive coordinator and head junior high coach; Matt Scarbrough, offensive and defensive line and special teams; Larry Forrester, who covers receivers and corners; Chris Murry, safeties and slot receivers; Chris Wagoner, offensive and defensive line; and Terry Seevers, junior high defensive coordinator.
The Mustangs open their season against the Walnut Ridge Bobcats on Aug. 31 in Walnut Ridge. As usual, the game promises to be an exciting match against the cross-town rivals.
