Samera Orrantia climbs the artificial rock wall at the Hillcrest Preschool in Strawberry on Monday, the first day of school, while Ayden Bristow plays with a dump truck in the background. This is the first year for all of Hillcrest's preschoolers to be on the same campus.

County enrollment
rises 150 this year

Countywide enrollment, at 3,246 this year, is the highest its been since 2002. Numbers have fallen at Hillcrest, Sloan-Hendrix and Black Rock, but student totals have increased at Hoxie, Imboden Area Charter School and Walnut Ridge. Total enrollment is up 150 from last year's 3,096.

Hoxie City Council
discusses fire ratings

Members of Hoxie City Council discussed several aspects of the city's fire rating during their regular meeting last Tuesday night.

City of Walnut Ridge
votes to establish website

Walnut Ridge will soon have its own Internet website following the city council's unanimous vote in favor of the site at their Aug. 14 meeting.

Flippo is Miss LawCo.

Tiffany Michele Flippo, daughter of Randy and Ella Flippo of Walnut Ridge, has been chosen as the 2007 Miss Lawrence County. She is a 2007 graduate of Walnut Ridge High School and is attending Black River Technical College this fall.

WR purchases
new equipment

The Walnut Ridge Street Department recently purchased a 331 Bobcat Mini Excavator, or trackhoe, which will be used primarily for mopping ditches and replacing tiles, along with other duties pertaining to city streets and landscaping. continued...
