WR fireworks display is Saturday
Hagen Mitchell, the seven-year-old son of Gary and Angela Mitchell of Jesup, bobs for an apple Saturday at the sixth annual fireworks display at Strawberry. The Strawberry Fire Department hosted the event, which also included entertainment by local band Backroads. The City of Walnut Ridge will sponsor a fireworks display at Stewart Park on Saturday evening.
The Walnut Ridge Fire Department will have a concession stand, and the Luscious Lagoon, a tropical sno vendor, will be there.
The Ben Brand Band will perform at 6:30 p.m.
"I had a lot of people request that we bring back the annual fireworks display," said Walnut Ridge Mayor Michelle Rogers. "Several citizens expressed how much they enjoyed it before and how much they have missed it the last few years. I think it's a great tradition, and I am pleased to be bringing it back to Walnut Ridge."
The final events of the annual Portia Picnic will be held today (Wednesday), beginning with the opening of the carnival at 11 a.m.
Political speaking will be from 1-4 p.m. with anticipated speakers including: Gov. Mike Beebe, Congressman Marion Berry, Lt. Gov. Bill Halter, Atty. Gen. Dustin McDaniel, State Treasurer Martha Shoffner, Land Commissioner Mark Wilcox, State Sen. Robert Thompson and former State Treasurer Jimmie Lou Fisher.
