When Kari Shanks, manager of the Walnut Ridge Wal-Mart, nominated Leland "Lee" Turnbull for a Community Involvement Award for their 12-store market, he was honored.

He then went on to win the award for their market and then the award for the region, which includes the entire state of Arkansas.

"It's a great honor," Turnbull said of receiving the statewide award. "It was great to even be put in for it, but especially great to receive it for the whole region."

Turnbull works in the garden center at the Walnut Ridge Wal-Mart, where he has been employed for three years. He also works for Williams Baptist College overseeing their landscaping.

His involvement in public service is what made him an obvious nominee, according to Shanks.

"Lee does a lot for the community," she said

Turnbull is a volunteer with CASA (Court Appointed Special Advocates). He and his wife, Judy, are currently serving as advocates for 10 children in three separate cases. He is also the chairperson of the CASA Advisory Board for Sharp, Lawrence, Randolph and Jackson counties.

He serves as chairman of the Lawrence County Election Commission and chairperson of the Walnut Ridge City Beautification Committee. He is a member of the Rails-to-Trails Board, the Walnut Ridge Army Flying School Museum Board and the Master Gardeners.

Turnbull also delivers senior food packs to 13 senior citizens every two weeks and assists with fund-raising for the proposed Children's Shelter.

The Turnbulls moved to Walnut Ridge, Judy's hometown, after Lee retired from a career in banking in Memphis.

As recipient of the award, Turnbull was a guest of honor at the Wal-Mart shareholders meeting, May 29 through June 1 on the campus of the University of Arkansas in Fayetteville.

"We're proud of him," Shanks said. "It's a pretty big honor."
