WRHS Class of '57
pleased with efforts
Cynthia England Hicks, a member of the WRHS Class of 1957, shared with us a few significant events that happened in relation to the class.
- Their class was the last to graduate before the fire of December 1957 that destroyed the old high school building and gym.
- The Little Rock Central High Crisis would occur in the fall of 1957. At least one member of the class, Gary Rose, along with Jack Allison and possibly others from this area, would be called to keep the peace
there as members of the Arkansas National Guard reserve.
- The 725th Aircraft Control and Warning Squadron was stationed at the Walnut Ridge air base around the time of their senior year.
Members of the 50-year class were pleased to see the Walnut Ridge Army Flying School Museum and the Boeing 737 airplane dining room at the Parachute Inn. They were proud of the efforts put forth to develop local attractions.
Speaking of that, the Rails to Trails project has received a major boost by obtaining the $40,000 Arkansas Department of Parks and Tourism grant. This should allow the trail to be paved from the trail head in Hoxie north about one mile to the edge of Walnut Ridge.
An effort is also underway to pursue the Main Street Arkansas Program for Walnut Ridge. An informational meeting, including facts about the application process, is planned for June 12 at 2 p.m. at the Gateway Theatre on Main Street. A representative from the Arkansas Historic Preservation Program will speak at the meeting. Those desiring more information can contact Lorra Whitmire or Milton Smith at First National Bank.
As times change, our area is evolving. With increased and continued local efforts, I believe we can evolve into something good.
