The Walnut Ridge baseball Bobcats earned runners-up honors at their regional tournament. Team members are (front, from left): Bennett Dudley, Jayce Matthews, Jared Blackwell, William Wilcoxson, Heath Kennedy, Curtis Jackson; (middle) Nate Looney, Nick Estes, Logan Gaither, Ryan Sluder, Baron Lorance, Jake Neal, Preston Drake, Luke Holloway; (back) Coach Derek Bramlett, Tom Jackson, Chris Logan, Ryan Weir, Tyler Kennedy, Brandon Dawson, Noah Burnside and Coach Jason Ward. The team also placed second in the district tournament and made it to the second round of state tournament action.
Cats are runners-up
in regional tourney
Tuckerman's Alex Sullins overpowered Walnut Ridge's Bobcats both on the mound and at the plate in leading the Bulldogs to a 12-1 win in the championship game of the 2A North Regional Baseball Tournament on May 1 at Newark.
Sullins allowed three hits while striking out 15 in seven innings of work. Walnut Ridge managed only four base runners for the game. At the plate, Sullins batted 2-for-3, including a two-run homer, and had three RBIs.
The game was scoreless after two innings, before Tuckerman jumped ahead with three runs in the third. The Bulldogs broke the game open with five runs in the fifth inning and added one in the sixth.
The Bobcats tallied their only run in the sixth inning. Jared Blackwell doubled, took third on a wild pitch and scored on a ground-out by William Wilcoxson.
Tuckerman added three runs in the seventh to set the final score.
Freshman Curtis Jackson took the loss for the Bobcats.
