Zebras are regional champions
The Black Rock Zebras claimed the championship of the 1A-3 Regional Baseball tournament with a 7-5 win over host Izard County Consolidated on May 1 at Brockwell.
Mitch Thompson earned the victory from the mound. He pitched all seven innings, allowing five runs and striking out six. Thompson pitched a total of 12 innings in the regionals, earning all three wins.
The Zebras took an early 1-0 lead and added another run in the third. Black Rock hammered the ball in the fifth inning and increased their lead 7-0.
This score held until the bottom of the sixth inning, when errors hurt the Zebras, as the Cougars scored five runs.
The Zebras regained control and held on for the win.
At the plate, Thompson hit 2-for-3, including his 10th home run of the season, and three RBIs, for a total of 70 on the season. Tommy Lawrence notched a two-run homer, and Matt Chadwick earned a hit and two RBIs.
Thompson was named the Most Valuable Player of the tournament. Zebras J.J. Nunally, Nathaniel Aaron, Logan Orrick and Chadwick were all named to the All-Region team.
Black Rock lost to Jasper 8-4 in the first round of the state tournament on Friday at Southside Bee Branch.
