Cats beat Bay,
earn spot in finals
The Walnut Ridge Bobcats built an 8-0 lead after five innings and withstood a Bay rally to hold on for an 8-7 win over the Yellowjackets in the semifinals of the 2A-North Regional baseball tournament at Newark on Monday. Bay scored seven late runs, including three in the seventh inning, and had the tying run on second base when the final out was recorded.
The Bobcats were scheduled to face the Tuckerman Bulldogs in the championship game on Tuesday evening, in a rematch of last week's district title game, won by the Bulldogs.
Tyler Kennedy earned the win, pitching 5 2/3 innings and allowing four runs on six hits with eight strikeouts.
Ryan Weir hit 1-for-4, including a two-run homer in the first inning, and Brandon Dawson had two hits.
Chris Logan singled in the winning run in the top of the ninth inning to give the Walnut Ridge Bobcats an 11-10 win over Buffalo Island Central in the first round of the regional baseball tournament Saturday at Newark.
Walnut Ridge led 5-2 in the top of the sixth inning, before BIC scored four runs in the bottom of the inning to take a 6-5 lead.
The Bobcats stepped up and scored five runs in the top of the seventh inning to regain the lead at 10-6, but BIC tied the game with four runs in the bottom of the seventh, forcing extra innings.
After a scoreless eighth inning, Walnut Ridge's Heath Kennedy led off the ninth inning with a walk. Jarred Blackwell and William Wilcoxson loaded the bases on bunts to set the stage for Logan's game-winner.
Tyler Kennedy came on in the seventh inning to earn the win in relief.
