Zebras ready for state actionDebbie Richey
The Black Rock Zebras defeated the Armorel Tigers 14-12 in eight innings in the semifinals of the 1A Region 3 Regional baseball tournament at Brockwell on Monday. Black Rock was to face the host team, Izard County Consolidated, in the championship game on Tuesday evening. Making it to the regional finals qualifies the Zebras for the state playoffs.
The Zebras trailed 10-8 as the seventh inning approached, but recorded three runs to take an 11-10 lead. The Tigers scored one run in the bottom of the seventh to tie the game at 11-11 and send the contest into extra innings.
Black Rock scored three runs in the top of the eighth inning to move ahead 14-11. The Zebras then held Armorel to one run in the bottom of the inning to secure the win.
Nathaniel Aaron went 2-for-5 with a solo homer and three RBIs. Jay Nunally notched two hits and two RBIs, and Matt Chadwick recorded two hits and an RBI.
The Black Rock Zebras hammered Norfork 10-0 in the first round of the Class 1A Region 3 baseball tournament at Brockwell on Saturday.
The Zebras took a 4-0 lead in the first inning, on their way to scoring 10 runs in the opening three innings.
Mitchell Thompson and Chris Richardson combined to pitch a one-hitter. Thompson closed with five strikeouts in three innings, and Richardson contributed two innings of hitless relief.
Thompson notched a three-run homer in the second inning, and had four RBIs. Aaron went 2-for-2 at the plate, and Nunally recorded two RBIs.
Izard County Consolidated defeated Black Rock's Lady Zebras 15-0 in the 1A-3 regional softball tournament on Saturday at Brockwell.
