Baseball Zebras are
The Black Rock Zebras captured the championship of the 1A-3 District Baseball Tournament with an 8-5 win over the Weiner Cardinals in the title game on Monday at Black Rock. The Zebras advance to the Class A Region 3 tournament hosted by Izard County Consolidated at Brockwell. Regional play begins on Saturday, with Black Rock as the top seed in the tournament.
Weiner jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first inning before Black Rock rallied for three runs in the third inning and never trailed again. Chris Richardson got the first hit of the inning. Blake Meeks walked, and Logan Orrick doubled in Richardson. Mitchell Thompson then singled in two runs.
Black Rock tacked on two more runs in the fourth inning. Jay Nunally led off with a single. Meeks singled to drive in Nunally. Orrick drew a walk, and Thompson doubled to deep left center, driving in Meeks.
The Zebras added another run in the fifth on Tommy Lawrence's solo home run, making the score 6-3.
Black Rock added a couple of insurance runs in the sixth inning. Meeks hit a two-out solo home run to right center. Orrick followed with a walk and scored on a double by Thompson.
Thompson earned the complete-game win, striking out eight batters and giving up only three hits.
Offensively for the Zebras, Meeks went 2-for-3 with two RBIs. Thompson went 3-for-4 with four RBIs, and Lawrence was 2-for-3 with an RBI.
