WR Quiz Bowl team is state champ
The Walnut Ridge High School Quiz Bowl team has won the 2A division of the Arkansas Quiz Bowl competition. Arkansas Quiz Bowl champions were decided over the weekend in the state division finals held at the Arkansas Educational Television Network in Conway.In the competition final televised live over AETN on Sunday, WRHS's Quiz Bowl team defeated Gillett 215 to 170 to win the 2A division state championship.
Other final standings were:
- District 1A ~ Alpena over Haas Hall Academy, 275 points to 180.
- District 3A ~ Episcopal Collegiate over Salem, 300 points to 135.
- District 4A ~ Hamburg over Pocahontas, 245 points to 180.
- District 5A ~ Batesville over Little Rock Christian, 260 points to 190.
- District 6A ~ Parkview over Benton, 245 points to 145.
- District 7A ~ Fort Smith Southside over Cabot, 325 points to 285.
Jack Kent, captain of the WRHS team, was one of eight MVP's named during the tournament and was also named all-state. MVPs have the highest score in their division of the state tournament. Ryan Caldwell was also an all-state selection.
The Arkansas Governor's Quiz Bowl Association awarded each first place team $3,200 in scholarship funds and each second place team $1,600. Each MVP also received a trophy, medallion and a $250 scholarship check.
"Quiz Bowl" is a celebration and recognition of scholarship that has been an AETN tradition since 1985. In a series of questions, players must display their knowledge in literature, math, science, history, art, music and economics. Teams from across the state compete.
The Arkansas Governor's Quiz Bowl Association holds regional tournaments around the state during March. A percentage of teams in the tournament advance to the state tournament. State tournaments are held in early April. The top two teams from each classification advance to the state finals.
