Hillcrest girls beat MelbourneDebbie Richey
The Hillcrest Lady Screamin' Eagles defeated Melbourne 17-7 in high school softball on Thursday at Lynn.
Hillcrest took a 2-1 lead at the end of the first inning and added four runs in the second inning for a 6-1 lead.
Melbourne scored a run in the third inning and three in the fourth to cut the Hillcrest lead to 6-5. Hillcrest responded with four runs in the bottom of the fourth to extend the lead to 10-5.
Each team scored two runs in the fifth inning before Hillcrest added five runs in the bottom of the sixth to take a 17-7 lead and bring the mercy rule into effect.
Jessica Broadway started on the mound and allowed three runs on nine hits, with three strikeouts and one walk, to earn the win.
Terra Polston hit 3-for-4 with a triple and two RBIs. Jessica Jarrett hit 2-for-4 with an RBI, scored two runs and had a stolen base. Broadway batted 1-for-2, scored two runs and had two stolen bases. Whitney Jones had a double, three RBIs and a stolen base. Lauren Pickle had two RBIs and scored a run. Natalie Johnson hit 2-for-4 and scored a run. Tamara Evans batted 2-for-4 with an RBI, scored a run and had two stolen bases. Lindsey Deeter scored a run and had a stolen base. Miranda Doyle scored two runs and had a stolen base, and Stevie Howard scored a run.
