County to crack
down on dumping
Keith Freeman, Lawrence County road foreman, filled a pickup truck with trash that was dumped out on a county road.
"It's just disrespectful and shows disrespect towards your neighbor," said County Judge Alex Latham, referring to the growing problem of trash being dumped out around the county.
Keith Freeman, county road foreman, said, "It's getting to be a big problem all over the county and getting worse all the time."
Last Wednesday, Freeman filled a pickup truck with trash bags dumped in one spot off County Road 716, a couple of miles east of Hwy. 67, between Minturn and Hwy. 91.
Judge Latham said in some cases, names can be found among the trash, allowing them to levy fines on the guilty parties.
"We're going to try to police this," said Latham. "Our goal is to try to keep the county as clean as possible."
Judge Latham said he has talked with Sheriff Dan Ellison and asked for help in policing the county in order to catch the perpetrators. "We're going to crack down on it," Latham added.
"What we've already been doing and will continue to do is put out dumpsters for class IV garbage, which includes such items as large household appliances," Latham said.
The county places two dumpsters in the county each quarter. The dumpsters will next be available beginning Monday and will be located at the County Shop, on Hwy. 67 South of Hoxie, and at Jones Wrecker Service in Powhatan.
Latham stressed that the dumpsters are for class IV waste only. The dumpsters must be manned to insure they are used only for the proper items. The county also incurs dumping fees. Therefore, a $20,000 a year budget is necessary for the dumpster program.
Latham said disposal services for household trash pickup are available for residents throughout the county. He also mentioned that the city of Walnut Ridge is expecting to offer a dumpster for residents of Walnut Ridge to use regularly.
