Sherri Sparks and Paige VanBrook, dispatchers for Lawrence County Communications, presented information to the Quorum Court on two grants the county recently received from the state Homeland Security program.
A grant for $22,869 was awarded to county law enforcement for the purpose of updating surveillance gear and communications equipment. The county plans to purchase night vision goggles, digital high-speed cameras, a repeater and AWIN portable radios.
The other grant, in the amount of $29,464, was awarded to county fire departments for the purpose of updating equipment. They plan to purchase digital cameras, VHF radios, a pager, four radio bases, AWIN portable radios and a battery charger.
The county has also received a $16,000 grant from the state to update voting sites throughout the county.
In other business, the court voted to purchase an M650 ballot counter. Justices have been discussing the machine for several months. After looking at the cost, the budget committee recommended the purchase, saying that the machine was definitely necessary.
County Judge Alex Latham reported that Mica Vance of Lynn has been appointed to the Lawrence County Library Board of Directors.
