An investigation into a shooting involving a Walnut Ridge police officer is still ongoing, according to Mayor Michelle Rogers.

Rogers said she spoke with Arkansas State Police investigators on Tuesday, and they said they were still working on their report.

In the meantime, the officer, as directed by policy, has been placed on administrative leave with pay until the investigation is complete.

WRPD Chief John Lamb did issue the following statement following the incident.

"On March 7, 2007, at approximately 5:35 p.m. an officer with the Walnut Ridge Police Department responded to 605 West Poplar Street to answer a call in regards to a theft of property complaint. During the course of the investigation, an altercation occurred with a white male, approximately 36 years old.

"The officer was assaulted by the male outside the residence. The officer fired his weapon at the male, striking him in the upper left leg. The suspect was placed in custody and transported to Lawrence Memorial Hospital and then later to UAMS Medical Center. According to UAMS, the suspect was treated and released on March 8, 2007."

The names of the officer and the individual who was shot have not been released by officials.
