WR holds public
meeting on land issue

The Walnut Ridge City Council held a public meeting on Thursday evening at Firemen's Hall to receive input from citizens in respect to the simultaneous detachment of 18 acres of land inside the city limits and annexation into Hoxie's city limits. Approximately 30 people attended, including Hoxie Mayor Donnie Roberts and Hoxie alderman Sherry Moore.
The property belongs to Wilson Schmidt who would like to develop the property for both commercial and residential use; however, the property has neither water nor sewer services.
Schmidt said he plans to start breaking ground as soon as the weather clears up.
Deputy OK after shootingLawrence County Sheriff Dan Ellison reported Friday morning that the deputy involved in a shooting incident near Powhatan Thursday afternoon has been released from the hospital.
An investigation into a shooting involving a Walnut Ridge police officer is still ongoing, according to Mayor Michelle Rogers.
A Ravenden man was killed in a two-vehicle accident on Highway 67 in Hoxie, just south of the Highway 63 interchange, on March 7, according to a report from the Arkansas State Police.

Portia is finalist
The Portia Picnic Fourth of July Celebration in Portia was ranked in the top three contenders for an award during the 2007 Henry Award ceremonies at the Governor's Banquet held during the 33rd annual Arkansas Governor's Conference on Tourism. The conference was held March 4-6 in Hot Springs.
