WR hopeful for
new fire station

Gretchen Hunt

The city of Walnut Ridge is proceeding with plans to construct a new fire station, according to Mayor Michelle Rogers.

She said the key is going to be securing the funding. She said there are no plans for a sales tax.

"Right now we are looking at several options for funding," Rogers said.

In the meantime, an architect has drawn up plans for a station that would have room for eight vehicles, which would allow the fire department to store all their equipment inside.

"That way, we would have nothing outside in the weather," Rogers said.

The mayor said there had been discussion previously about building a new city complex to house the fire and police department, as well as city offices. The focus now is to build just a fire station.

The city is planning to build the station on property owned by Walnut Ridge at the intersection of Free Street and Southwest Sixth.

Rogers said the city's Fire Committee is working on the project and is anticipating receiving final cost estimates soon.
