Dates moved up
for DST, primary
Daylight Saving Time (DST) is coming much sooner than many of us realize. We will be springing forward one hour at 2 a.m. on Sunday, March 11, instead of the first Sunday in April. We will also return to standard time a week later, the first Sunday in November (Nov. 4), instead of the last Sunday of October.
Those changes extend Daylight Saving Time a total of four weeks. The changes are the result of the Energy Policy Act, which President Bush signed on Aug. 8, 2005.
The government believes that people tend to use less lighting in the evenings with the extended evening daylight hours. Along with saving energy, maybe this measure will also help counteract the trend of global warning.
Arkansas presidential primary elections for 2008 are tentatively scheduled for Feb. 5, 2008, according to Dale Freeman of Portia, chairman of the Lawrence County Democrats.
In early March 2005, then Gov. Mike Huckabee signed into law Senate Bill 235, "An Act Concerning Presidential Preferential Primary Elections," which moves the state's presidential primary from May to the first Tuesday in February. The bill easily passed both houses of the 85th General Assembly.
With the legislature now in session, there is a possibility that this could change, said a spokesperson in the Secretary of State's office.
By moving up the date of the presidential primary, Arkansas should play a bigger role in helping determine which party's presidential candidates will make it on the General Election ballot in November.
Dan Poindexter has shared with us an old TD clipping with Pop Hilburn's recipe for spaghetti. The late Harry "Pop" Hilburn was known in this area for his spaghetti and headed a family of good cooks. The clipping is as follows:
What list of local chefs and their specialties would be complete without Pop Hilburn's famous spaghetti recipe?
2 lbs. ground beef
1 medium onion 2 strips of celery
1/2 medium bell pepper
3 t. Gebhardt chili powder
1 2 1/2-size can tomatoes
Cook onions, celery and bell pepper until tender. Add ground beef, salt and pepper to taste. Add chili powder and simmer for 30 minutes. Mash tomatoes and add. Add tomato juice for desired thickness.
Cook and drain 12-oz. package of spaghetti. Add to recipe.
