Hoxie advanced to the second round of the 3AAA Boys District Tournament at Manila last week before falling to the East Poinsett County Warriors 63-49 on Feb. 13.
EPC took a 15-13 first-quarter lead. The Mustangs continued their steady defense in the second period and trailed 30-28 at halftime.
Hoxie did not stumble in the third quarter and cut EPC's lead to 42-41 entering the final quarter. The Mustangs were forced to foul, sending EPC to the line. Hoxie failed to regain their momentum, and the Warriors pulled away for the win.
Ray Volner led Hoxie with 23 points and 13 rebounds. Byron Stocker closed with 10 points, and Jon Lawrence added seven. Cade Crisler had five points, and Tanner Jarrett pulled down eight boards.
First round
Hoxie took on Harrisburg in the first round on Feb. 12.
Harrisburg acquired a 9-6 lead over Hoxie closing the first quarter and carried a 16-14 lead into halftime.
Hoxie bounced back in the third quarter, tying the match at 24-24 approaching the final quarter.
Crisler broke the tie with a three-pointer giving Hoxie a 27-24 lead. Lawrence followed with another three, as the Mustangs continued their stampede. Hoxie made 15-of-17 free throws down the stretch to secure the 47-36 win.
Lawrence led the Mustangs with 19 points. Volner had 11 points and 13 rebounds, and Tanner Jarrett pulled down 10 boards. Stocker closed with seven rebounds, and Crisler added six points.
