WR boys fall in tourney
White County Central defeated the Walnut Ridge senior boys in the second round of the 2A-2 District Basketball Tournament at Cedar Ridge on Feb. 13.
The Bobcats, who received a first-round bye, took a 17-14 lead over the Bears, heading into the second quarter. With the game tied 19-19 with 6:36 left to play, the Bears released a torrent of baskets to take a 31-29 halftime advantage.
Walnut Ridge charged the hardwood in the second half, defying WCC with their strong defense. Chris Logan's defense resulted in the five-second rule to be called on WCC. The Bobcats began to drain baskets, taking a 43-42 third-quarter lead.
The fourth quarter transpired into a race to the finish, with the game tied 49-49 with 4:29 left to play. Logan sank a three-pointer with 27.3 seconds left to bring the Bobcats to within 61-56. Walnut Ridge began fouling in an attempt to gain possession of the ball, which sent WCC to the foul line. The Bears converted their free throws to secure the 65-56 win.
Walnut Ridge had four players with double digits, led by Logan with 16 points. Cameron Kelley contributed 15 points, and Cody White added 11 points and five assists. Seth Chamblee had 10 points, 12 rebounds and two blocks, and Tyler Kennedy recorded four points.
