Lady Cats advance to regionals

The Walnut Ridge Lady Bobcats faced Tuckerman in the semifinals of the 2AA District Basketball Tournament at Cedar Ridge on Thursday.

The game was tied 4-4 with 3:48 left in the first quarter before the Lady Bulldogs slipped away with a 10-5 first-quarter lead. Tuckerman let loose a series of baskets in the second period to take a 22-12 halftime lead over the Lady Bobcats.

After the break, the Lady Bobcats outscored the Lady Bulldogs 13-10 in the third period, but still trailed 32-25 as the fourth quarter approached.

Walnut Ridge released a rain of baskets, led by Vanessa Oliver's strong outside shooting, as the Lady Cats pulled to within two points with 3:26 left to play. Tuckerman withstood the Lady Cats' rally and held on for the 45-40 win.

Rachel Looney led the Lady Bobcats with 15 points. Vanessa Oliver contributed 10 points, and Chelsea Treadway had eight. Jordan Rorex, Lacey Cobble and Carrie Massey chipped in two points each, and Chelsey Linebaugh added a free throw.

The Lady Bobcats play Riverside in the first round of the AA North Regional Tournament at Rector on Thursday at 4 p.m.
