Lady Mustangs beat Corning

The Hoxie Lady Mustangs took on Corning's Lady Bobcats in girls basketball action on Jan. 29 at Corning.

Senior high

Hoxie grabbed an early 13-8 lead at the close of the first quarter. The Lady Mustangs increased their intensity in the second quarter and ran out to a 34-16 lead at halftime.

Hoxie continued to deliver baskets in the second half to increase their lead to 47-23 heading into the final quarter and cruised to a 60-38 road win.

Four Lady Mustangs scored in double figures, led by Rachel Goff with 18 points. Jessica Anglin, Megan Black and Ashley Glenn each had 13 points. Anglin also pulled down 10 rebounds.

Junior high

In junior girls action, the Lady Bobcats took a 10-7 lead as the first quarter came to a close. Corning continued to dominate the game, leading 22-12 at halftime.

The Lady Cats did not falter as they led 32-23 over the Mustangs. Hoxie could not rise to Corning's momentum, losing 37-29.

Amy Galbreath led Hoxie with eight points. Kelsey Lewis followed with seven points, and Alyssa McConnell contributed five.

Seventh grade

The Hoxie seventh grade girls concluded their season with a 24-23 overtime loss to Corning.

Corning took a 6-2 lead at the end of the first quarter. The second quarter was a race to the halftime buzzer, as both teams hammered the boards. The Mustangs trailed 14-12 at halftime.

The Lady Mustangs took to the hardwood in the third period and owned the court, taking a 19-17 lead heading into the final quarter. The score was tied 21-21 at the close of regulation, sending the game into overtime, where Corning slipped by Hoxie for the win.

Ashlyn Abbott led Hoxie with 11 points. Autumn Nelson contributed five points, and Alexia Crow closed with three. Katelyn Cook and Taylor Smith each tossed in two points.

The Hoxie seventh grade girls finished the season with 13-3 record, including 11 consecutive wins to start the season.

"They had a great season," said coach Larry Forrester.
