Eagles claim district title
Junior Screamin' Eagle Dylan Wooten (#4) pulls up for a shot as Bobcat defenders Derek Medlock (#10), Curtis Jackson (#32) and Logan Gaither (#20) rush in. Hillcrest won the district title with a 47-34 win over Walnut Ridge.
The Hillcrest Screamin' Eagles defeated Walnut Ridge's Bobcats in the boys final of the 2A-2 Junior High District Basketball Tournament on Saturday at Lynn.
The game was scoreless until Walnut Ridge's Bennett Dudley notched two free throws with 3:01 on the clock. Chris Jones scored a basket for Hillcrest, but the junior Bobcats held onto a 5-4 lead at the end of the first quarter. The fight for the championship peaked as the teams left the hardwood tied 16-16 at halftime.
The Jr. Screamin' Eagles exploded in the third quarter, as the Bobcats struggled to score. The ball rolled off the rims, not wanting to fall for Walnut Ridge, and Hillcrest outscored the Bobcats 14-3 in the third quarter to lead 30-19 with the fourth quarter approaching. The Bobcats continued to play harsh defense on the Eagles, but with Walnut Ridge's shots not falling, the Eagles seized the opportunity and captured the championship 47-34 over the Bobcats.
Dylan Wooten led Hillcrest with 18 points, including 10 in the third quarter, hitting 13-of-14 free throws. Derek Wooten contributed 15 points, hitting 9-of-10 at the line, and had six rebounds, four steals and four assists. Jones added eight points and had 15 rebounds and five blocks. Hunter Durham had four points, and Jacob Clifton chipped in two points and had six rebounds.
Walnut Ridge was lead by Dudley with 17 points. John-Scott Kelley and Derek Medlock record five points each. Curtis Jackson chipped in three points, and Logan Gaither added two.
