New mayor of BR
hoping for good things
Black Rock's newly-elected mayor, Bud McLaughlin, has began his first term as a city official.
McLaughlin, a 1962 graduate of Black Rock High School, ran unopposed in last year's election and is now working with the Black Rock City Council in initiating methods to beautify and bring new businesses into the city.
"Our main plan is to get the city cleaned up and try to get some businesses." McLaughlin stated. "There are a lot of good people here in Black Rock. All of my employees are good people. We should be able to do something."
McLaughlin, who spent 26 years in the U.S. Air Force, said that his beautification and new-business plans will take some time. "The Council and I see eye to eye," he said. "We're going to get our heads together and take on the obstacles one at a time."
The mayor is a lifetime resident of Black Rock and father of Tracetta Hodges, Stacey McLaughlin and Calvin E. McLaughlin II. He is engaged to Rebecca Winburne of Conway.
McLaughlin joined the Air Force in 1963. After his time in the Force, he spent 17 years working at a John Deere dealership, until leaving last April.
With no experience as a politician or city official, McLaughlin said that "nothing has set me up for this. This experience is a learning process."
McLaughlin further stated that he is optimistic about his new duties and responsibilities as mayor of Black Rock.
"It's a new experience," he said. "I hope I can do something with it."
