Hoxie looks toward
economic development
Amber Adams
Staff Writer
Hoxie City Council passed an ordinance during a special meeting on Jan. 30 proposing the detachment of land currently located in Walnut Ridge and the annexation of that land into Hoxie.
The ordinance will allow Hoxie to annex approximately 18 acres of land on Hwy. 63. Mayor Donnie Roberts will present the request to the Walnut Ridge City Council at its next meeting.
Roberts said there are businesses looking at that area and the city hopes to use it as a starting point for further economic development.
A resolution was also passed, at the recommendation of the reuse committee, authorizing the purchase of land within city limits from Nicholas Family, LLC. The land, which includes 11.5 lots, will be purchased for $35,000.
The city does not currently have plans for the property, but reuse committee chair Dewey Scott said it may be used for economic development or a housing addition.
The only restriction placed on the sale was that a restaurant not be built there for the next 10 years, since Nicholas is in the restaurant business.
In other business:
- the council approved the 2007 budget.
- adopted sections one, two and three of the personnel policy handbook.
- discussed hiring a new dogcatcher.
