close after heavy snow

Schools and businesses across the county closed last week after a cold front moved in earlier than expected Wednesday afternoon, bringing the first snow of the season to Lawrence County.
Over two-and-one-half inches of snow fell throughout the afternoon and evening hours on Wednesday causing schools to let out early and remain closed through Friday. Many businesses also closed due to road conditions.
A collie dog is safe and warm after being rescued last Wednesday from a near-frozen ditch by two Portia residents.
Hoxie looks toward
Hoxie City Council passed an ordinance during a special meeting on Jan. 30 proposing the detachment of land currently located in Walnut Ridge and the annexation of that land into Hoxie.
Rep. Rogers says Hwy.
State Representative J.R. Rogers of Walnut Ridge called together a meeting Monday morning with area leaders to discuss priorities and projects of concern. In January, Rogers began his second two-year term as state representative for District 73, which includes all of Lawrence County and parts of Independence and Greene counties.

In addition to new mayors in Walnut Ridge and Hoxie, Lawrence County also saw changes in administration in Black Rock, Strawberry, Alicia and College City.
