Walnut Ridge defeats Hillcrest

Walnut Ridge traveled to Lynn Thursday night to take on Hillcrest in high school basketball action. n.

Senior boys

The Walnut Ridge Bobcats let their presence be known early, as they led 17-9 over the Screamin' Eagles, closing the first quarter. Hillcrest started a run, closing the gap to 30-23 at halftime.

The Bobcats' inside-outside game was too much for Hillcrest, as they moved out to a 51-35 lead approaching the fourth quarter and secured the 63-51 conference win in the final period.

Walnut Ridge topped out the night with four players in double digits. The Bobcats were led by Chris Logan with 18 points, while Cameron Kelley added 15. Tyler Kennedy dropped in 11 points, and Seth Chamblee contributed 10. Cody White recorded seven points, and Robert Rider closed with two.

Hillcrest was led by Jordan Hunter with 15 points and Aaron Britton with 11.

Jared Cook tossed in eight points, and Ludie Sexton closed with six. Rob Mize recorded four points, and Chris Blevins chipped in three. Dustin Durham, Jared Parker and Dillion Simpson added two points each.

Senior girls

As the teams took to the hardwood, the scoreboard remained dark until 6:18 was left in the quarter when Chelsea Treadway notched the first points for the Lady Bobcats. Jessica Jarrett recorded Hillcrest's first points with 4:55 left in the quarter. With 47.6 seconds left in the opening quarter, Hillcrest broke an 8-8 tie with a free throw to lead 9-8 at the end of the quarter.

The first half of play was rolling to a close as the Lady Screamin' Eagles held a 24-19 lead over the Lady Bobcats.

Walnut Ridge's Chelsey Linebaugh hit a three-pointer with 6:30 to play in the third quarter, giving the Lady Bobcats a 25-24 lead. Treadway notched back-to-back baskets with 4:24 left to play, as the Lady Bobcats increased their lead to 41-29 heading into the final quarter.

Walnut Ridge overpowered Hillcrest in the fourth quarter, as the Eagles ran into foul trouble, claiming the 55-39 win.

Three Lady Cats were in double digits led by Linebaugh with 15 points, and Vanessa Oliver and Treadway with 14 points each. Rachel Looney recorded eight free throws and 12 boards, while Jordan Rorex and Lacey Cobble closed with two points each.

Jessica Broadway led the Eagles with 12 points. Whitney Jones and Amber Glenn added seven points each, and Jarrett closed with six points. Terra Polston recorded two three-pointers, and Lauren Pickle notched two points.

Junior Girls

IIn junior girls action, Hillcrest took a 10-3 lead over Walnut Ridge, closing the first quarter of play and soared to a 24-4 lead as halftime approached.

After the break, Hillcrest continued with their solid defense, holding a 40-10 lead as the final quarter neared. The junior Lady Eagles' consistent scoring delivered the mercy rule, as Hillcrest defeated Walnut Ridge 42-13.

Miranda Doyle led the Eagles with nine points. Natalie Johnson added seven points, and Tamara Evans contributed six. Shelby Huskey closed with five points, and Katelyn Hammock recorded four. Leah Smith, Shanda Mangold and Kelly Beasley tossed in two points each.

Ashley Baker led the Bobcats with seven points, and Ashton Lawson contributed three. Amanda Emison notched two points and Josie Wagoner added a free throw.
