Hoxie drops close
one to EPC in OT

The Hoxie boys traveled to Lepanto on Friday to take on the East Poinsett County Warriors in high school basketball action.

Hoxie led 52-49 with 23 seconds left, but EPC recovered a Hoxie deflection and drained a three-pointer with nine seconds left to tie the game. Hoxie quickly inbounded the ball and hit Tanner Jarrett on the other end of the court, but his driving lay-up fell off the rim as time expired.

In overtime, the game was tied at 58-58 when the Mustangs were called for a foul with .9 seconds to play. EPC hit one free throw to win the game 59-58.

The Mustangs were led by Ray Volner with 14 points and five rebounds before leaving the game late with a back injury he sustained when he hit the floor after being undercut while retrieving a rebound. Byron Stocker added 13 points, and Tyler Thompson contributed nine points. Jonathan Lawrence scored nine points, hitting 7-9 free throws, and Tanner Jarrett finished with eight points and eight rebounds.

Hoxie fell to 10-8 for the year and 7-6 in conference play.

The Hoxie junior boys defeated EPC 43-34.

Cade Crisler finished with 21 points, including 19 in the second half, and also had six rebounds and five assists. Joseph Richardson recorded a double-double with 14 points and 10 rebounds, and hit 6-of-7 free throws in the second half. Chris Montelongo added 12 points and seven rebounds.

In the seventh grade game, Hoxie was led by Sebastian Irvin with 20 points. Devin Roberts had 11 points, and Kenny Mashburn chipped in five.


Hoxie's senior Mustangs posted a convincing 60-36 win over Piggott on Jan. 16 at Hoxie.

The Mustangs' defense held Piggott scoreless in the second quarter while taking a 30-10 halftime lead.

As the teams returned to the court, Hoxie continued their attack, leading 41-22, as the final quarter approached.

Jarrett led Hoxie with 18 points and six blocks. Volner recorded a triple double with 16 points, 10 boards and 10 assists. Lawrence contributed 13 points, and Stocker added eight points and 13 rebounds.

In junior high action, Hoxie knocked out an 18-2 lead over the Mohawks at the end of the first quarter. The junior Mustangs continued to own the hardwood in the second quarter, leading 28-7 at halftime.

Back on the court, Hoxie assaulted the baskets, leading 37-9, heading into the final quarter of play and recorded a 44-16 victory.

Crisler led the Mustangs with 15 points, eight boards and five assists. Jeremy Anglin topped out with nine points and added 10 rebounds. Richardson contributed five points, five rebounds and five steals. Jake Hitt and Jake Smith closed with four points each, and Brad Harp notched a three-pointer.

The eighth grade boys hit the court first, with Hoxie defeating Piggott 24-19.

Dylan Dulaney and Roberts led Hoxie with six points each.


The Hoxie seventh graders defeated Paragould 38-27 on Saturday at Paragould.

Irvin led Hoxie with 11 points, and Brody VanWinkle and Roberts each added 10.
