Cats earn homecoming wins
Walnut Ridge's Seth Chamblee goes up for a shot against Hillcrest's Chris Blevins as Screamin' Eagle Dustin Durham (#20) looks on. The two county teams faced off at Walnut Ridge's homecoming, and the Bobcats took the win 69-55.
Walnut Ridge hosted Hillcrest for the Bobcats' homecoming on Jan. 16. The Bobcats sent their fans home happy with three hard-fought wins over their conference 2A-2 foes.
The Walnut Ridge senior boys hammered the boards in the first quarter and took a commanding 24-3 lead heading into the second period. The Bobcats continued to lead 42-20 at halftime.
Hillcrest's outlook was grim, as Walnut Ridge continued their ambush, leading 50-37 heading into the final quarter and cruised to a 69-55 win.
Seth Chamblee led Walnut Ridge with a double-double of 16 points and 14 boards. Tyler Kennedy contributed 15 points, all on three-pointers, and Cody White added 15 points. Chris Logan also had a double-double with 12 points and 12 rebounds, and Robert Rider had nine points.
Jordan Hunter led Hillcrest with 12 points.
Sharum Gymnasium was on fire when the senior girls took the hardwood for the final game of the night.
With Hillcrest point guard out with a knee injury, the Lady Eagles began to struggle, as Walnut Ridge took an 11-7 lead heading into the second quarter.
Hillcrest let their inside presence be known, as they outscored the Lady Cats 19-16 in the second quarter, but Walnut Ridge still held a 27-26 lead at halftime.
The battle continued in the third quarter, as Walnut Ridge moved out to a 32-20 lead with 3:13 left in the third quarter, but Hillcrest rallied to cut the Lady Cats' lead to 41-36 heading into the final quarter.
Hillcrest took a 48-45 lead with 1:38 on the clock in the final quarter, but Walnut Ridge regained a two-point lead with 55.4 seconds to play, 49-47.
As the final seconds ticked off the clock, the Lady Cats led 50-49. Hillcrest missed a three-point attempt with 15.9 seconds left to play and Lady Cat Rachel Looney was fouled as she rebounded the shot. Looney went to the charity stripe shooting three free-throws for the foul and a Hillcrest technical foul. Looney iced the game, giving Walnut Ridge the 53-49 homecoming win.
Looney had a double-double with 15 points and 15 boards for the Bobcats, and Chelsea Treadway contributed 14 points. Jordan Rorex closed with 13 points, while Chelsey Linebaugh had nine and Vanessa Oliver added two.
Jessica Jarrett and Jessica Broadway led Hillcrest with 15 points each.
Homecoming night got underway with the junior Bobcats taking a 32-26 halftime lead over Hillcrest.
The battle resumed with both teams fighting for the lead. Eagle Josh Mayland's three three-pointers helped Hillcrest move into a 37-32 lead over the Bobcats as the final quarter approached.
The game was up for grabs, as Eagle Derek Wooten dropped a three with 1.9 seconds left to play. But it was a little too late, as Walnut Ridge held on for a 53-50 win.
For Walnut Ridge, Derek Medlock had 27 points and seven rebounds, and Bennett Dudley had nine points and five assists.
