Hillcrest junior tourney underway

The Hillcrest Junior High Invitational Basketball Tournament kicked off Saturday with games at Lynn and Strawberry.

WR ~ Maynard girls

Maynard eased into an 8-6 lead over Walnut Ridge as the first quarter came to an end and continued to lead 13-8 at halftime.

The Lady Bobcats began to make their presence known in the third quarter, but still trailed 21-16. The final quarter was up for grabs until the last second of play, as Walnut Ridge took the 31-26 win.

Staci Spargo led Walnut Ridge with 10 points, and Ashley Baker added eight. Regan Jean contributed six points, Josie Wagoner closed with five and Lexi Harris notched two.

WR ~ Weiner boys

Weiner took a two-point lead 12-10 as the second quarter opened, but the Bobcats rolled past the Cardinals to lead 19-15 at halftime.

The fight continued into the final quarter, as Weiner took a 30-28 lead. Despite Walnut Ridge's strong defense, they failed to claim this victory, falling 43-36 to the Cardinals.

Bennett Dudley led the Bobcats with 11 points, and Derek Medlock added nine. John-Scott Kelley closed with seven points, and Curtis Jackson contributed five. Heath Kelley and Luke Holloway recorded two points each.

S-H ~ BR girls

Sloan-Hendrix took a 12-0 lead to close the first quarter. Sarah Sloan was the first Lady Zebra to score, but Black Rock trailed 28-4 at halftime.

After the break, the Lady Hounds continued to overpower Black Rock, leading 35-12 closing the third quarter. Sloan-Hendrix recorded the 38-15 win.

Kristin Belcher led the Lady Greyhounds with six points, and Haley Slusser added five. Ashley Stallings, Kara Morris and Gennifer Simpson contributed four points each. Hannah Rowsey closed with three free throws, and Alivia Hackworth notched two free throws. Heidi Powers, Amanda Holland and Magen Austin scored two points each, and Marie Wonger chipped in a free throw.

Amber Lamb led Black Rock with six points, and Jessica Rudd closed with four. Megan Jones added three points, and Sarah Sloan contributed two.

Maynard ~ Mammoth Spring boys

Maynard slipped by Mammoth Springs for a 33-32 win.

Hoxie ~ Delaplaine girls

The Mustangs led 13-2 at the close of the first quarter. Hoxie continued to dominate in the second period, leading 17-8 over Delaplaine at halftime.

The Mustangs overwhelmed the Indians, closing the third quarter leading 26-12 and went on to claim a 34-19 win.

Alyssa McConnell led Hoxie with 12 points. Chasity Becker contributed six points, and Courtney Jones added five. Kelsey Lewis and Amanda Nelson had four points each. Rhandi Simms had two points, and Brittany Hembrey chipped in a free throw.

Hillcrest ~ Delaplaine boys

The Eagles led 10-4 at the end of the first quarter and continued to maintain a 16-10 lead over the Indians at halftime.

The Eagles defense shut down the Indians, and Hillcrest led 33-17 heading into the final period of play. Hillcrest ousted Delaplaine 42-30.

Derek Wooten led the Eagles with 13 points. Chris Jones and Hunter Durham added eight points each. Dylan Wooten contributed six points, and Josh Mayland tossed in five. Tyler Crews and Jacob Clifton had two points each.

S-H ~ Hoxie boys

The game was tied 10-10 at the close of the first quarter before Hoxie pushed past Sloan-Hendrix in the second quarter to lead 18-15 heading into halftime.

The game was tied again 18-18 with 2:34 left on the clock, but the Mustangs regained the lead 23-18 heading into the final period of play.

Hoxie held Sloan-Hendrix scoreless in the fourth quarter, as the Mustangs took the 31-18 victory.

Hoxie was led by Joseph Richardson with 10 points and 10 rebounds, and Cade Crisler had nine points. Jake Hitt added six points and six rebounds. Chris Montelongo had three points and seven boards and Jeremy Anglin had three points.

Zack Ogden led the Greyhounds with six points, and Coy Yasler added five. Chase Dejournett closed with four points and Josh Collins chipped in three.

BR ~ Cedar Ridge boys

Black Rock took an 8-6 lead over the Timberwolves at the close of the first quarter, but Cedar Ridge eased into a 20-14 lead as the first half came to a close.

After the break, Cedar Ridge continued to lead 32-27. The Timberwolves overran the Zebras, taking the 41-36 victory.

Ben Walker led Black Rock with 16 points.

Tuckerman ~ ORC boys

Tuckerman advanced to the next round with a 43-26 win over Oak Ridge Central.

Tuckerman ~ Weiner girls

The Tuckerman girls routed Weiner 44-17.

ORC ~ Cedar Ridge girls

Cedar Ridge defeated Oak Ridge Central 39-23 to advance to the second round.

Second round
Hillcrest ~ Hoxie girls

The Hillcrest girls faced Hoxie in a second-round game on Saturday.

Hillcrest took a 15-5 lead at the close of the first quarter. The Lady Mustangs' tempo increased in the second quarter, but they still trailed 22-12 heading into halftime.

The Lady Eagles consistent defense halted Hoxie in the third quarter, as Hillcrest led 27-15 entering the final quarter of play. The Lady Eagles defeated the Lady Mustangs 32-17 to advance to the next round.

Hillcrest was led by Natalie Johnson with 13 points. Miranda Doyle contributed eight points, and Stevie Howard and Tamara Evans each added five points. Allie Harris added a free throw.

Hoxie was led by Brittany Hembrey with seven points. Chasity Becker closed with four points, and Amanda Nelson, Alyssa McConnell and Courtney Jones contributed two points each.
