Hoxie's senior Mustangs had to work overtime on Friday, but sent a homecoming crowd home happy with a thrilling 77-74 win over the Corning Bobcats.

As the Homecoming festivities concluded in the gym lobby, fans were confused when no players came to mid-court for the tip-off. Hoxie's Ray Volner then went to the foul line to shoot free throws for technical fouls that Corning received for dunking during the warm ups.

Hoxie proceeded to get control of the ball, but the battle had just begun. With 1:34 left in the first quarter, the game was tied 15-15. Volner dropped a bucket, giving the Mustangs a 17-15 lead with 1:22 on the clock. As the buzzer sounded, Jon Lawrence aced two points, tying the game 20-20.

The teams continued hammering the boards, with Hoxie leading 39-37 at halftime.

Back on the court, Hoxie gained a 49-44 lead with 2:52 left in the third quarter, but Corning pushed past the Mustangs to take a 52-51 lead at the close of the third quarter.

The final quarter was full of excitement. With 1:07 left in the game, Lawrence hit a two-point shot to pull the Mustangs to within one point of the Bobcats 68-67. Volner was fouled at 18:8 seconds and made one of two free throws to tie the game 68-68.

The Bobcats took a 70-68 lead again, but Lawrence did not falter as he aced another two-point shot at the last second of the game to tie the battle 70-70.

Volner was fouled with 2:15 left in overtime and made both free throws to give Hoxie the lead 72-70. Bo Stocker notched a two-point shot with: 37 left, allowing Hoxie to lead again 75-74. The Bobcats sent Volner back to the line with 20.9 seconds left in overtime. He aced both shots to secure the homecoming win for Hoxie.

Volner had a triple double for the Mustangs with 24 points, 10 rebounds, 11 assists, four steals and six blocks. Tyler Thompson had 14 points and 10 rebounds, and Lawrence had 17 points, including five three-pointers. Tanner Jarrett had 14 points and 11 boards, and Byron Stocker had six points and 10 rebounds.

The junior high boys opened the evening with a barnburner, as Corning slipped past the junior Mustangs 45-42.

Corning led 13-7 at the close of the first quarter. During the second quarter, the game began to escalate, with the lead changing hands many times. Cade Crisler made a two-point shot in the last second of the quarter to give Hoxie a 23-21 lead at halftime.

Back to the hardwood, the battle continued, as Corning slipped to a 36-33 lead heading into the last quarter.

The teams kept up the intensity in the fourth quarter. With 3:33 left in the game, Corning led 40-37. With the clock showing 42.6 seconds, Crisler hit a two-pointer to bring Hoxie to within two points, but the Mustangs could get no closer.

The Mustangs led 30-19 at halftime, but the Bearcats scored a series of baskets to cut Hoxie's lead to 43-37 as the last quarter approached.
