Dennis Truxler, superintendent at Hoxie School, visited the Hoxie Preschool recently to receive a check for $2,000 for the Hicks-Blakeney Scholarship. Mya Pinkston, Kady Greer and Faith Blakeney, who are among the students at Hoxie Preschool, presented the check on behalf of their families.
January named Financial
January has recently been named Financial Aid Info Month according to Donna Pinkston, counselor at Hoxie School.
Aid Info Month
Hoxie will be hosting a financial aid info night on Jan. 17 for parents and students. Walnut Ridge will host one the first week of February. Federal aid, student loans and national and private scholarships will be discussed during the meetings.
Pinkston said privately funded scholarships are much easier for students to get than national scholarships.
“Giving to private scholarships is important to our future as a community,” said Pinkston.
“The amount of federal aid gets lower and lower every year, and eventually it will run out.”
Donations to private scholarships are tax deductible and there are several available at schools throughout the county.
Privately funded scholarships at Hoxie include the Hicks-Blakeney, Rusty Reithmeyer, Taylor and Betty Welch Scholarships, as well as FFA Scholarships.
To establish a scholarship for Hoxie students or contribute to an existing one, contact Debbie Sullivan at 886-2401.
Walnut Ridge School offers the Hilburn Foundation, W.R. Glenn, Mack Davis, Fisher Memorial, Reta Moore, Ellis Memorial, Masonic Lodge Scholarships and the recently established Richard Everett Jarboe Memorial Scholarship.
Private scholarships at Black Rock High School include the Alumni Scholarship and the Anna Wells Endowment Scholarship.
Hillcrest High offers the Larry Glenn and Seagraves Scholarships. The Justin Durham Memorial Scholarship, which usually goes to a student in FFA, is also available.
Sloan-Hendrix also offers several private scholarships.
