Hoxie teams advance to semifinals
Lady Mustang Jessica Barber (#40) looks for someone to pass the ball to, as teammate Ashley Glenn (#22) heads for the other end of the court. The Hoxie girls made it to the semifinals of the Northeast Arkansas Invitational Tournament, where they fell to Cave City 72-50.
The Hoxie's boys and girls teams each advanced to the semifinal round of the 3A brackets at the NEA Tournament last week in Jonesboro.
The Lady Mustangs and the Cave City Cavewomen took to the court on Dec. 26.
With the game tied 6-6 with 3:33 left in the first quarter, the Cavewomen edged to a 13-11 lead with 1:23 left in the quarter. Hoxie's Rachel Goff sank a two-point shot to tie the game 13-13 with .54 seconds to play. Cave City stepped up and took the 16-13 lead as the second quarter approached. Cave City continued owning the nets in the second period and led 39-28 at halftime.
Despite the Lady Mustangs efforts', Cave City lead 53-41, heading into the final period. Cave City overpowered Hoxie 72-50 to advance to the finals.
Megan Black led Hoxie with 15 points. Jessica Barber added 11 points, and Jessica Anglin contributed 10. Whitlee Parrish closed with five points, Goff netted four and Ashley Glenn tossed in three points.
Jordan Witt led Cave City with 27 points.
Hoxie faced Marmaduke in boys' semifinal action on Dec. 27.
Hoxie grabbed a 23-18 lead to close out the first quarter, but the Greyhounds edged Hoxie with a 43-39 lead leaving the court for halftime.
When the teams returned to the hardwood, Marmaduke began to overpower the Mustangs, increasing the lead to 65-53 heading into the final period of play.
The Greyhounds proved too much, as Hoxie fell 82-62.
Hoxie was lead by Tanner Jarrett with 23 points. Ray Volner added 14 points, and Jon Lawrence contributed 12. Byron Stocker closed with six points, and Tyler Thompson recorded five.
