The Hillcrest Lady Screamin' Eagles earned 1A-2A runners-up honors in the Northeast Arkansas Invitational Tournament held recently at Jonesboro. Team members are (from left): Lauren Pickle, Breanna Doyle, Jessica Broadway, Jessica Jarrett, Whitney Jones, Kalie Durham, Amber Glenn and Tarra Polston.

Hillcrest's Jessica Broadway (#23) takes a shot while being double-teamed by Riverside players. Fellow Lady Screamin' Eagle Amber Glenn (#32) watches for a possible rebound. Hillcrest beat Riverside 69-63 in the semifinals of the NEA Tournament before losing to Buffalo Island Central in the finals.
Hillcrest's Lady Screamin' Eagles advanced to the championship game of the Girls 1A & 2A bracket of the NEA Basketball Tournament at Jonesboro last week. The Lady Eagles were defeated by Buffalo Island Central 64-34 in the finals on Dec. 27.
BIC made short work of the first quarter, taking a 20-8 lead over Hillcrest. Despite Hillcrest's efforts, the Mustangs overran the Lady Eagles in the second quarter and led 39-15 at the close of the first half.
The Lady Eagles failed to get their game on in the second half, as turnovers began piling up, and BIC led 59-23 heading in to the final quarter.
BIC did not let up, as they took the win, earning the NEA title.
Jessica Broadway led Hillcrest with 12 points. Whitney Jones contributed nine points, and Amber Glenn notched six. Tarra Polston and Breanna Doyle recorded three points each, and Lauren Pickle closed with a free throw.
Broadway, Jones and Doyle were each named to the all-tournament team.
Back to the NEA after the Christmas break, Hillcrest faced off against Riverside in girl's semifinal action.
As the game got underway, it appeared this was going to be a barnburner from the start, as the Lady Eagles led 21-20 after the first quarter. The Lady Rebels edged into a one-point lead with 4:46 left in the half, which they increased to 48-38 at halftime.
Hitting the hardwood in the third quarter, Lady Eagle Whitney Jones sank two three-pointers back-to-back, giving the momentum to Hillcrest and the Lady Eagles trailed by only one at 56-55 entering the final period.
With Riverside holding a 62-59 lead with 5:27 to play, Doyle notched a basket to bring the Eagles within one at 62-61. Doyle did not waste time, as she sank another two-pointer at 2:25 to give Hillcrest a 65-63 lead.
Broadway aced a bucket with 1:38 left to play to help the Lady Eagles secure the win 69-63 on their way to the finals.
Doyle led the Lady Eagles with 22 points, and Broadway contributed 17. Glenn tossed in 12 points, and Jones netted eight. Lauren Pickle closed with four points, and Kalie Durham and Jessica Jarrett added three points each.
