The board also works to educate the public on highway safety and highway needs, House said.
The board officially voted House to the council on Tuesday. Also named to the board to represent Arkansas Highway District 10, comprised of 11 Northeast Arkansas counties, were Henry Jones of Jonesboro and Wayne Nichols, a former state representative, from Marked Tree.
House also met with the board Tuesday to develop upcoming legislation for highway construction in the state. "I felt real positive when I left there about what is taking place for Lawrence County," House said.
It was reconfirmed Tuesday that the Highway Department will be letting bids in January or February on construction between Swifton and Alicia, east of the current highway, on the freeway route for U.S. Hwy. 67. "This is good news for the Walnut Ridge and Hoxie area that it's coming on north from Swifton to east of Alicia," House said.
He added that the next phase of extending the four lanes of Hwy. 67, the 10 1/2 miles to the Hoxie-Walnut Ridge bypass, is scheduled for a 2008-2017 finish date.
