second-round game

Hoxie Sophomore Brad Cook (far left) is tackled by a Shiloh Christian player after crossing the goal line for Hoxie's lone touchdown in Friday night's game. The Mustangs advanced to the second round of the state tournament for the second time in three years, but the number-one ranked Saints were too much for them and captured the win 49-7.

The Hoxie Mustangs traveled to Springdale on Friday to face the Shiloh Christian Saints in the second round of the 3A state football playoffs. The Saints jumped on the Mustangs with four touchdowns in the first quarter en route to a 49-7 win.

"Shiloh came out and hit us quickly on their first series to make it 7-0. We were putting together a nice first-series drive ourselves, but put the ball on the ground. It seemed like things steam rolled very quickly before we could get our feet back under us," said Hoxie coach Tom Sears

Shiloh Christian led 35-0 at halftime.

"I thought we played pretty good in the second quarter. We moved the football and only allowed one touchdown," added Tom Sears.

Houston Hancock intercepted a Shiloh Christian pass in the second half and returned it 75 yards to the Saints' eight-yard line. Brad Cook scored from two yards out. Cook added the PAT to make the score 35-7.

Shiloh Christian scored two more touchdowns to make the final score 49-7.

"Shiloh has a fantastic football team. They are definetly #1 in the state for a reason. I will be very shocked if they are not the AAA state champions," Sears added.

Offensively for Hoxie, Alex Ward had 19 attempts for 47 yards. Brad Cook had 11 attempts for 34 yards, and Chris Troutman had 11 attempts for 33 yards.

Defensively, Alex Ward had six tackles. Weston Gates and Jeremiah Dauck each had five tackles and a sack, and Jeff Johnson also had five tackles.

"I was very proud of how we continued to battle the whole game. I am very proud of how we finished the 2006 season and of what we were able to accomplish. This will help carry a lot of enthusiasm into the off-season and the 2007 season," Sears said.

"I would like to thank the Mustangs' fans, not only for their support at Shiloh Christian, but for their support for the entire season," said Sears.

Hoxie's statistical leaders for the 2006 season included:

Houston Hancock led in passing, going 48-of-90 for 486 yards, four touchdowns and one interception.

Alex Ward led the Mustangs in rushing with 1,459 yards and 16 touchdowns on 216 attempts, and had 1,649 all-purpose yards.

Adam Madden led in receiving with 24 catches for 274 yards and two touchdowns.

Tyler Thompson led the defense with 140 tackles, followed by Ward with 119 tackles. Cook recorded 117 tackles, and Derek Johson had 100.

"I would like to thank our seven seniors: Chris Troutman, Weston Gates, Jeremiah Dauck, Tyler Crisler, Jeff Johnson, Byron Stocker and Alan Whitmire for their dedication and leadership this season," Sears said.
