Frankly Speaking...By John Bland
Congratulations to the Hoxie Mustang and the Walnut Ridge Bobcat football teams, who have both qualified for the State Playoffs. This could be the first ~ and is definitely one of the few times ~ both have qualified for state in the same year. The Bobcats head to Earle on Friday, while the Mustangs will go to Gurdon for the first round of playoffs.
We also congratulate Walnut Ridge native Sam Hilburn of North Little Rock, who Governor Huckabee appointed on Oct. 27 as a new member on the University of Arkansas Board of Trustees. Hilburn is a successful North Little Rock attorney, who has always been proud of his Walnut Ridge roots.
Speaking of the University of Arkansas, the Internet is a buzz with fans seeking tickets to the Razorback vs. Tennessee Volunteers football game this Saturday. Earlier in the season, I thought this might be an easy game to find available tickets, since Saturday is also the opening day of modern gun deer season. However, the Razorbacks, too, have had a great season. The U. of A. at Fayetteville will host ESPN College GameDay Built by Home Depot for the first time ever on Saturday from 9-11 a.m.
Everyone I have talked with is ready for the elections to be over, which by the time you read this will have happened, not counting the possibility of a runoff on Nov. 28. The weeks leading up to the election are hectic for newspapers. Many will breathe a deep sigh of relief that they have passed.
Anyone driving across Northeast Arkansas on Saturday saw farmers busily harvesting cotton and soybeans before the drenching rains of over three-and-a-half inches fell Sunday and Monday.
