Hoxie advances to stateDebbie Richey
Alex Ward led a balanced Hoxie ground attack as the Mustangs rolled to a 42-0 win over Hughes in senior high football Thursday at Hughes. The win, coupled with Piggott's 48-0 win over Brinkley, secured Hoxie a berth in the state football playoffs. The Mustangs will travel to Gurdon on Friday to take on the Gurdon Go-Devils at 7:30.
"I'm extremely proud of this football team and how they are playing right now. This bunch fought through a lot of adversity this year and continued to get better every week," Hoxie head coach Tom Sears said.
Hoxie did not waste any time Thursday. Adam Madden returned the opening kickoff 75 yards for a touchdown. Brad Cook added the PAT.
The Mustangs scored again with 4:58 remaining in the first quarter on a six-yard run by Ward. The PAT by Cook was good. Hoxie's third touchdown came with 1:30 on the clock in the first quarter on a 10-yard run by Chris Troutman. The PAT by Cook was good, to make the score 21-0 at the end of the first quarter.
Hoxie scored at 8:27 of the second on a 10-yard run by Ward. The PAT failed. Troutman ran 30 yards for a score with 3:24 remaining in the second quarter. Ward ran in the two-point conversion to give the Mustangs a 35-0 halftime lead.
Hoxie's final score came at 1:21 of the third on a five-yard run by Blaine Middlecoff. The PAT kick by Cook was good, to make the final score 42-0.
Ward rushed for 102 yards and two touchdowns on 10 attempts. Houston Waldrupe ran for 98 yards on nine carries. Troutman added 80 yards and two touchdowns on five carries. Tyler Thompson had six carries for 50 yards, and Middlecoff had 29 yards and a touchdown on six carries.
Defensively, Thompson totaled 11 tackles and one interception. Derek Johnson added 10 tackles. Cook had 10 tackles, and Weston Gates had eight. Ward recorded seven tackles, while Jeremiah Dauck and Byron Stocker had five tackles each. Clay Hart, Walter Glass and Brandon Mosley each had a fumble recovery.
