While in Washington the group spent several hours each day in training sessions covering a variety of topics including professional dress and etiquette, character education, financial literacy and budgeting. Massey said the training focused heavily on teamwork and the art of appreciation.
Aside from meetings, the group did several tours including the White House, Capitol Hill, Union Station, the Lincoln Memorial and Arlington National Cemetery.
During the Capitol tour, each state group met with representatives from their state. Massey met with representatives from Senators Blanche Lincoln and Mark Pryor' s offices.
"The training was really helpful for some of us," Massey said.
Learning how to work as a team and how to show appreciation to team members were two of the most important lessons to her. Self-presentation was another key topic for Massey. She said they had to prepare a speech on a given topic, such as community service, and be able to hit the high points in 30 seconds or less.
"When talking to legislators, they don't have a lot of time, so we have to make our point quickly," she said.
Massey was accompanied by Raelyne Massey, FCCLA sponsor at Walnut Ridge, and other state officers.
The group will attend Phase III training in St. Louis on Nov. 17-19.
