Shelton named BPW Woman of Year

Diana Shelton (right) is the Walnut Ridge Business and Professional Women's Club Woman of the Year. Presenting her with the award is Sandy Sullins, last year's recipient.

Diana Shelton has been named recipient of the Business and Professional Women's Club Woman of the Year award. She received the honor at a breakfast on Monday of last week as part of National Business Women's Week.

Shelton has been a member of Walnut Ridge BPW for 11 years and has held local, regional and state BPW offices and positions. She is now serving her third time as president of the local club and has been regional secretary at least twice.

Some of her other BPW titles have included serving as regional and state committee chair for the membership nominating committee, and she is currently state public relations committee chairperson and has served on the Wilson Foundation Committee.

"I couldn't begin to say enough about what I've learned from those (BPW) ladies. You can't put a price tag on that and the legacy they leave to working women," said Shelton. "They are a bunch of good women, from Anna Marie Camp (local member since 1934) on down."

Shelton recently worked with Raelyne Massey, FCCLA advisor at Walnut Ridge High School, to coordinate a joint venture for a group of girls, ages 13-16, called Camp BPW. "Camp BPW was actually a dream of Diana's," said Sandy Sullins, last year's BPW Woman of the Year.

"She's just a great mentor for leadership, a great mentor for these girls," Sullins added.

Shelton has also been active in Leadership Lawrence County and helped to coordinate the last three or four classes. She has also participated in the Regional Leaders Program.

Shelton has previously been active in the Chamber of Commerce and local and county festivals. She is currently treasurer for the Lawrence County Walk of Hope organization that supports cancer victims.

"Leadership (programs) and BPW have gone hand in hand to get me where I am today," Shelton said. The lessons she has learned have enabled her to gain confidence for such tasks as public speaking.

Shelton is a loan assistant with First Community Bank in Hoxie. She has been with the bank a total of nearly eight years. She also spent over 12 years with Farm Credit Services and approximately eight years at Williams Baptist College, where she was administrative assistant for the offices of development and public relations. She also spent a year with Edward Jones.

Shelton and her husband, Mike, live in Walnut Ridge and attend church at Pleasant Grove Baptist Church in Annieville. Their daughter, Lara, resides in St. Petersburg, Fla.
