The Hoxie Mustangs traveled to Corning on Friday night and suffered a 14-7 setback at the hands of the Bobcats in senior high football action.

Hoxie got on the scoreboard first with a one-yard run by Houston Hancock. Brad Cook kicked the extra point to put the Mustangs up 7-0 with 5:20 left in the first quarter.

Corning then scored on a 14-yard run by Sheridan Jackson. The PAT tied the game at 7-7. The Bobcats scored the game's final points on a six-yard run by James Peterson with :35 left in the first half.

Offensively for the Mustangs, Hancock completed 11-of-18 passes for 139 yards. Alex Ward rushed 14 times for 57 yards. Hancock had 14 carries for 46 yards and a touchdown. Chris Troutman had five carries for 16 yards. Cook carried once for nine yards. Jeff Thompson and Houston Waldrupe each had two carries for two yards.

Hoxie had 276 yards of total offense, while holding Corning to 133.

"Our kids battled their hearts out and I'm extremely proud of their effort, but we just didn't get it done offensively," head coach Tom Sears said.

" We had it inside their 15-yard line twice and didn't get any points."

Tyler Thompson led the Mustangs' defense with 27 tackles, followed by Derek Johnson with 18. Cook, Ward and Weston Gates each had 16 tackles. Troutman had 13 and Waldrupe had 10.

"I thought we were extremely aggressive and physical on defense," Sears added.
