Hoxie claims homecoming victory

Alex Ward rushed for 211 yards and three touchdowns to lead the Hoxie Mustangs to a 42-12 homecoming win over East Poinsett County on Friday at Crider Field.

Minutes after the opening kickoff, Houston Hancock scored on a one-yard run to put the Mustangs up 6-0. The PAT was no good.

Ward continued Hoxie's momentum by scoring on a two-yard run, and then catching a pass from Hancock for the two-point conversion to give the Mustangs a 14-0 lead over the Warriors.

Hoxie scored again with 10:26 left in the first half on an 81-yard run by Hancock. Brad Cook's PAT was good, making the score 21-0.

Tyler Thompson scored on a four-yard run at 9:18 of the third quarter. Cook's PAT was good to make it 28-0.

EPC scored on an eight-yard pass, with 2:36 left in the third quarter, to cut the Hoxie lead to 28-6.

The Mustangs scored at 8:49 of the last quarter, on a two-yard run by Ward. Cook's PAT was successful to make the score 35-6.

The Warriors scored at 7:13 of the fourth on a 10-yard pass play to make the score 35-12.

The Mustangs' Ward scored on an eight-yard run at 5:36, and Cook's PAT was good to make the final score 42-12.

In addition to Ward, leading rushers for Hoxie included Hancock with four carries for 89 yards and two touchdowns. Chris Troutman rushed eight times for 45 yards. Cook rushed four times for 37 yards. Jeff Johnson carried three times for 22 yards, and Thompson carried six times for 20 yards and a touchdown.

Hancock completed three-of-five passes for 23 yards.

On defense, Thompson and Ward had 10 tackles each. Cook closed with eight tackles and an interception. Clay Hart and Houston Waldrupe totaled six tackles each.

Players of the game for Hoxie were Ward on offense, Thompson on defense and Cook on special teams.

Hoxie travels to Corning on Friday.
