Witcher and Kelley nominated for Heisman Award

Walnut Ridge High School salutes two outstanding students with nominations for the Wendy's High School Heisman Award.

Morgan Witcher and Cameron Kelley have been nominated for the coveted award.

Awarded in conjunction with the collegiate Heisman recognition, this award honors the nation's top high school seniors who best exemplify a supreme citizen, scholar and athlete.

Principal Charles Lee and a school committee nominated these two students for their academic aptitude, athletic talent and their display of commitment to the community.

"At Walnut Ridge High School, we prepare our students for success by encouraging them to develop in all areas of their lives. Wendy's High School Heisman is the ultimate award we can bestow on our students for their achievements throughout high school," said Lee.

Celebrating 13 years of commitment to youth and education, this program was created through a partnership between Wendy's, the National Association of Secondary School Principals (NASSP) and the Heisman Memorial Trophy in 1994.

Witcher and Kelley were nominated for this program based on the following accomplishments:

Cameron Kelley, son of Sloane and Terry Kelley of Walnut Ridge, has excelled on the golf team at WRHS having recently been named to the 2A All-State Team. He was also the medalist at the Regional golf tournament. This summer he was third in the SW Regional Tournament of Champions.

Kelley represented the school at the Hugh O'Brian Youth Leadership Program, the Ralph Joseph Youth Leadership Program and at Boy's State. He has also served on Student Council and is a member of the National Honor Society and Key Club.

As a member of BADD, Kelley has been a leader in TCK programming in elementary. He is also active in the youth group at his church. Kelley is a starter on the basketball team and was a member of the Tri-County State Championship Team, which represented Arkansas in the SW Regional Junior Division Little League Tournament. He is on track to be an honor graduate.

Morgan Witcher, daughter of Mike Witcher of Walnut Ridge and Lisa Zirbel of Weiner, is serving this year as captain of the senior cheerleading squad. She is a starter on the senior high volleyball team and is also on the softball team.

Witcher was selected as Miss Bobcat and was recently named as the Walnut Ridge High School homecoming queen for football. She is an officer in the Student Council and is on the journalism staff.

As vice president of the Key Club, she is actively involved in volunteer activities that benefit the school and the community. Through BADD and TCK, Witcher has been a role model for elementary students in drug education programs.

In church activities she is a member of the choir, has helped with vacation Bible school and went on a mission trip to Okalahoma. With a 4.03 GPA, Witcher is currently competing for the title of valedictorian of her class.

Twelve national finalists will be invited for an all-expense paid trip to New York City on Dec. 8-10, to participate in the Heisman weekend festivities. ESPN2 will feature all twelve National Finalists during the Wendy's High School Heisman Awards Ceremony that will air on Dec. 10, 2006.
